Very sorry, but due to last minute problems, none of the committee can be at the meeting tomorrow evening to run it. Therefore we will have to cancel it. The next meeting will be on Monday 29th April at the end of teaching in the morning, around 11.30 am. 

Just to update you on our recent projects call. We received some great ideas. There are two of particular interest, one observational study and one RCT. We are now currently developing these ideas with the authors (but as the stage is early, we don't want to put the ideas out on a general email). There will be opportunities to eventually be involved in these.

Join the Committee - AGM - Mon 28th January 2013, 6.30pm for 7.00pm

The first meeting of 2013 will be our AGM. An opportunity to become more involved in the LSRG. There are five positions up for grabs: chairman and 4 committee members. The committee is responsible for running the meetings, maintaining the website and email communications, kickstarting projects by offering resources and contacts, and connecting with the other research collaboratives and the National Research Collaborative. Also in November, we will be hosting the National Research Collaborative Meeting at the Royal College of Surgeons - so lots to be doing in preparation for this.

It's a great opportunity to learn about how an upstart organisation is run as well as become more involved in the developement and delivery of research. All levels of experience are welcome as commitment is favoured over expertise. A position on the committee is not time-heavy at all as most participation is through email and is extremely rewarding.

The AGM will take place on Mon 28th January 2013, 6.30pm for 7.00pm, Seminar Room, Level 2 Podium, UCLH.

This will be the last meeting of the year. Please let us know if you have any project ideas you'd like to talk about informally. Even if it's on the back of an envelope at this stage, it's worth getting some input. All you need is an idea. By now you'll have seen the power of the network, where projects can expand rapidly when others from across the region join in. Plenty to be gained from engaging early.

We will be having updates from the National Appendicectomy Audit which recently closed data collection and new project proposals. Lots going on as you can see in the projects section of the website. Come along if you are curious.

This month we will hear an update on how the national appendicectomy audit is going. We will also have final results from the SHAPE study hot off the press and soon to be submitted.

This month there will be a briefing for anyone who is interested in joining the steering committee for Reza's PRIME study: a major project to run a cohort study to establish the rate of perioperative myocaridal events in general surgery. Amazing opportunity not to miss.

This month we have some preliminary results from SHAPE. Come along and see how our data analysis is going to be planned. We will also have further updates from other projects.

As ever the research will continue in the Prince of Wales Feathers pub opposite Warren St Station - usually the place where more research ideas flow.

If you have experience in research then please come and contribute to the discussions - it's a good way of supporting research without the work commitment. If you're new to research this is the best way to start to understand how research happens, what you can do now, and how you might go about doing an MD or PhD in the future.

Hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Lots for this month. We have Reza presenting his idea for a clinical trial - big stuff. Will be interesting to see how ideas start to be shaped. We also have Sofia and Toby updating us on their project to look at Mental Capacity Act awareness amongst trainees and consultants. It's just about ready to be launched. Nigel will also present the results from his pilot of the hyperbilirubinaemia in appendicitis study. Finally we'll have an update from Nick on the SHAPE study which is moving along nicely.
